Some of the articles published about Sony selling it’s shares in Square Enix are full of horrendous and poorly researched journalism.
Sony has suffered losses. Even Sony’s studios that were successful last year are finding themselves having to make cuts, so for the company to make 40+ million off shares that are relatively meaningless - they were simply purchased around the time of Square and Enix’s merger as Microsoft was pursuing the two companies - is good business.
Quite simply, Sony are trying to make a quick one off profit. The video games landscape has changed dramatically and Playstation remains Japan’s dominant brand - relations between Sony and Square Enix won’t be tarnished by this and Square Enix will continue making games for Sony. I think Square Enix themselves know all to well about financial issues and trying to turn around a loss.
